Laurie Simko "Horizontal Flight, oil on canvas, 24" x 36"

During the past six months our exhibiting artists have considered three prompts for inspiration. Please join us for this special opening reception to enjoy their responses for New Beginnings.

PROMPT #1

“Unfurl yourself into the grace of beginning.”

The well-known Irish poet, priest, and author, John O’Donohue, offers this line from his poem entitled, A Blessing for a New Beginning. You might enjoy hearing the artist, Chris Duffett, read it aloud!

PROMPT #2

“Turn, turn, tumble . . . tumble, tumble, turn.”

These words were scrawled on the wall of Winslow Homer’s Prout’s Neck studio around 1884. A text panel in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts exhibition “Of Light and Air: Winslow Homer in Watercolor,” describes the artist’s fascination with the movement of waves and the varied colors of ocean and sky. “Using the graceful cadence of a poet, he evoked the rotational energy of an oncoming wave and its crash or “tumble” on the coast.”

PROMPT #3

“What is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness?” John Steinbeck

Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley: In Search of America is not just a travel narrative; it is also a profound exploration of identity, belonging, and the American spirit. Besides thoughts on the changing seasons, Steinbeck’s insights into the morphing landscape of America during the early 1960s resonate with readers, making the book a significant work of American literature.
